Here is a quick overview about scheduling a newborn photography session and what to expect the day of the session.
I schedule my newborn sessions within the first two weeks due date. This is a tentative date and will likely change depending on the baby’s arrival. Having said that, there are no guarantees with newborns. They do what they please. I have done photo shoots at 6 days. Some cooperate and some don’t. I have done photo shoots at 4 weeks. Some cooperate and some don’t. Either way, they’re all wonderful!
If the baby is late you will contact me and we will play it by ear. If the baby is early, don’t worry about contacting me right away. Enjoy the new member of your family! Contact me in the next day or two by email or text and let me know that your baby is here. I will then check my calendar and will let you know what dates would work out best.
The day of the session I suggest to have the house at a good warm temperature. We might not need the heat on during summer though. The little ones don’t like to be too hot or too cold. Keep in mind that most of the poses will be of the baby in their diaper or naked. So the house has to be set at a comfortable temperate for them. I like to walk around and see what settings might work out best in terms of lighting and backdrops. For the most part I like to use the baby’s room, your room, the living room, and the yard if it’s a nice day.
As for feeding your baby, try and time it so that you are almost done with the feeding or completely done by the time I arrive. A happy belly equals a happy baby. And a happy baby equals a sleepy baby. Sleepy babies are awesome! If you wanted your baby in a wrap, diaper cover, or possibly naked then I suggest to take their clothes off (but keep them in their diaper!), wrap them up in a blanket, then start to feed them. The less we move them around after they have a full belly, the better.
Sometimes your baby will be asleep before I arrive and before the feeding. Try to keep them up by changing them or maybe a nice bath. We want the baby to be tired when I’m at your home not before.
If by chance the baby woke up on the wrong side of the crib, then I will try and capture what we can and possibly suggest another mini session (no charge) within the next few days. I want great pictures as much as you do so I am more than happy to come back another day and try to capture your baby at their best.
For props, I will bring a basket or two, some blankets (for backdrops), diaper covers, and cheesecloth wraps. Most props and hats that you see on my photographs belong to the baby. The picture will hold a different meaning if we utilize your hats, blankets, books, or other props you wanted to include in the picture. If there are specific shots that you wanted to capture, let me know before our session so we can prioritize.
I hope this overview helped answer some of your questions. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
